Cleanses and detoxes are used to rapidly eliminate toxins from the body. Most people perform cleanses once or twice a year when they feel sluggish or overweight. But instead of waiting until you feel bad before making a change, what if you ate in a way that naturally promoted the removal of toxins every day?
An alkalising diet is one that includes lots of plant foods containing naturally cleansing and protective ingredients such as antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. Eating clean is the best way to ensure optimal health over the long run without having to detox every time you start feeling bad.
Basic Alkalising Tips To Get You Started
Eating alkaline is characterised by a large amount of plant food such as fruits and vegetable, little animal protein, and little to no acid-forming junk food. Both of the last two food groups, when eaten in excess, have been associated with the development of diseases. In addition to eliminating health-deteriorating foods, eating alkaline means you replace unhealthy foods with the healthy kind to promote the natural removal of free radicals, chemicals and other risk factors that may cause disease or simply make you feel worse.
- Start With Breakfast!
Breakfast may not be your favorite meal of the day, but it’s a good time to set the stage for a day full of good eating habits. Stay away from glutinous breads and cakes and instead try a bowl of organic oats topped with blueberries and a tablespoon of organic flaxseeds. Starting your day with an alkaline multivitamin is another good way to assist with the removal of toxins.
- Drink Alkaline Water.
Water helps flush toxins from the body through the urinary system. The less time toxins spend in your body, the less amount of damage they are allowed to do. One of the easiest things you can do to naturally detox is drink lots of clean water daily.
Drinking alkaline water ensures that you will be flushing toxins out of the body while replacing them with alkaline minerals to help restore health. When you’re on the go, bring an Alkaline Mineral Stick along with you to ensure access to alkaline water wherever you are.
The Alkaline Mineral Stick is an NSF-certified stick composed of bioceramic balls made from natural minerals. Housed in a stainless steel tube and enclosed in a plastic container, they are perfect for dropping in your bottled water to give you an alkaline mineral boost no matter where your day takes you.
- Choose Your Salt Wisely.
There’s no need to completely give up salty foods if you’re trying to detox or clean up your diet. But choose your salt wisely. Fast foods and other salty foods are generally considered tasty yet they lack nutritional value and may increase toxin load. Instead, try cooking your meals at home and seasoning them with pink Himalayan salt, which is naturally derived from the Earth and does not contain any toxins.
In addition, pink Himalayan salt contains a decent amount of minerals including iron, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, potassium and chloride that are often lacking in an acidifying diet. It also contains traces of boron, fluoride, iodine, zinc, selenium, and copper. Lastly, pink Himalayan salt works at a cellular level as an antioxidant to flush toxins out of the body. Alkalising food does not have to be tasteless: it just has to contain natural ingredients that add to your health instead of take away from it.
Homemade Fruit and Nut Bar – The Ultimate Alkalising Snack Snacking in between meals is a great way to keep your diet on track when you need a slight energy boost but don’t require a full meal. Instead of reaching for potato chips or other processed snack, make these homemade fruit and nut bars and keep them nearby when temptation strikes.
Nuts and fruit are the perfect snack. They complement each other nicely and won’t send your insulin levels for a roller coaster ride. They are also full of fibre and healthy fat to keep you full until the next meal. To make, you’ll need:
- One cup organic almonds
- 15-20 cup organic Medjool dates
- A pinch of pink Himalayan salt (optional)
Start by soaking your almonds in water overnight. This is called activating your nuts and will help make them easier to break down in the digestive system. It also makes them easier to blend! Rinse them well and leave them to dry for about four hours.
When they've dried, add them to a food processor or high-speed blender and blend until they're chopped into fine pieces. Take the pits out of the centre of 15-20 dates and slowly add them to the food processor.
Dates are sticky, so the mixture will need to be pushed down from the side of the appliance from time to time. Add the pink Himalayan salt and blend together. Scoop the mixture out and form them into balls or bars and store them in an airtight container for the perfect snack!
*Optional extra:
You can also roll these in unsweetened flaked coconut and cacao powder for an added treat that even your children will love!
