Our blood has a very narrow pH range of between 7.35 and 7.45. If it deviates out-with this range, we will be sick or experience symptoms of sickness. The body has a number of buffer systems to keep our body pH within the normal range, but research is showing that modern diets put these buffer systems under considerable stress – and this is leading to deviations in pH, typically towards acidity.
The Importance of Body pH
Proper balanced body pH is essential to give good oxygen transfer through the body. As the level of acidity increases in the blood, so the level of oxygen decreases. According to leading medical doctor Michael Lam, Director of Medical Education at the Academy of Anti-Aging in his book Beating Cancer with Natural Medicine, the following things happen when the body is too acidic. An acidic environment will:
- Decrease the body’s ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients.
- Decrease energy production in the cells.
- Decrease the body’s ability to repair damaged cells.
- Decrease the body’s ability to detoxify heavy metals.
- Enable tumour cells to grow.
- Make the body more susceptible to fatigue and illness.
According to Dr Lam, an acidic pH and low levels of oxygen are the principal factors leading to cancer.
However, it is not just in cancer prevention and treatment that body pH is important: it is vitally important for everyone who wants to maintain good levels of wellbeing.
