In chemistry, pH is the measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. A substance with a pH of less than seven is acidic, while one with a pH between 7.1 and fourteen is alkaline.
The reality is that almost nothing has a pH score of seven, which means that almost nothing has that perfect balance between acidity and alkalinity.
You are, therefore, faced with the constant choice whether to consume acid or alkaline substances. Water is one such substance.
The most common medical advice is to drink at least two litres or eight glasses of water, per day. If you consume this required amount, you might want to control the properties of your water more carefully to ensure it is uncontaminated, natural, and healthy.
The risks of Excessive Acidity
A build-up of acid in the body is involved in many common conditions. Acid reflux disease is the uncomfortable condition that pushes acidic stomach contents upwards into the oesophagus and even into the mouth. Gout is a type of arthritis with very similar painful symptoms. Kidney stones are painful and often require surgery to remove. Metabolic acidosis causes rapid breathing, nausea, confusion, and lethargy. These illnesses are often avoidable, and they most certainly are worth avoiding.
To prevent these conditions, physicians often prescribe an alkaline diet especially high in alkaline minerals like calcium and magnesium which can help replace those lost in trying to deal with excess acidity.
What is Alkaline or Ionised Water?
Alkaline or ionised water is normal tap water that has been passed through a filter to increase its alkalinity score. This can be done in numerous ways, but the healthiest and most natural is to restructure the water with minerals to make it more alkaline.
In some countries, including Japan where people achieve a remarkably high life expectancy, alkaline water has long been used to neutralize excess tissue acidity, to help neutralize harmful free radicals that prematurely age cells and organs, to treat a host of degenerative diseases, and to fight bacteria. An increasing number of British people are discovering that they feel a lot better when drinking alkaline water, and filters have, as a result, become extremely popular with those who treasure their well being.
The difference Between Alkaline and Ionised Water
While these terms are often used interchangeably, they are not necessarily identical. Ionised water is always alkaline, but it is possible for alkaline water not to be ionised.
Think about it as follows: It is potentially easy to increase the alkalinity of water in ways that are not particularly natural or beneficial. For example, adding a spoon of baking soda or washing powder to a glass of water will significantly raise its alkalinity. It will probably not taste good, and will certainly have no natural health benefits, but it will be alkaline.
Similarly, many alkalising water systems do nothing but pass electricity through the water to increase its alkalinity, which is far removed from the natural substances which our bodies prefer to consume.
On the other hand, water can be alkalised very similarly to the way in which it occurs in nature. When water flows down a mountain stream, it raises its own alkaline score by collecting minerals from the rocks over which it flows. These minerals do not only alkalise the water, but also removes some impurities from the water. When this natural process is utilised by a water filtering system, that water is normally called ionised. It is alkaline, but it is also so much more. Therefore, alkaline ionised water has a higher mineral content than tap water, especially potassium, magnesium and calcium. These alkaline minerals, in turn, remove the acidic minerals from the water.
If scientific research is currently inconsistent regarding the health benefits of alkaline water, it may be because it fails to distinguish the new natural mineral-based ionising systems from the traditional unnatural ones. The technology has come many miles since then. This may be why people who drink it present testimonials that some scientists think may be exaggerated.
The Choice Should be Yours
Most tap water in Britain is slightly alkaline, but without the required equipment to test this, most water consumers cannot know whether their water meets this standard, or whether water that used to meet this standard continues to do so.
Moreover, if you drink bottled water, you must place your blind trust in the producer to report the properties of the water accurately and in intelligible language on the label. If you find this lack of control intolerable, you can manage the qualities of the water you drink through a filter that restructures the water and raises its alkalinity.
Instead of being stuck with only one source of water, you can vary your water intake and obtain it from different sources in accordance with the feedback you receive from your body. If you struggle with acidity, especially in your stomach and oesophagus, you can filter your water and raise its alkalinity score. If, for some reason, you feel you have had enough, you can go back to tap water for a day or two.
